‘From Barbie’s World to Elf’s New York’ to focus on narrative nuances in film

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — An instructor in the Penn State Hollywood Program who has over a decade of experience writing for primetime television will present a free public lecture focused on screenwriting and storytelling approaches Oct. 4 on the University Park campus.

Deepak Sethi will present "From Barbie's World to Elf's New York: Exploring Narrative Nuances in Film” at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in Carnegie Cinema (113 Carnegie Building).

Sethi’s decade-plus of primetime experience includes roles as a writer on “Family Guy,” “Brickleberry,” Max's “Close Enough” and Cartoon Network's “Apple & Onion.” He recently wrote for “Monsters at Work,” the continuation of the "Monsters Inc." franchise from Disney/Pixar, on Disney+.

Sethi’s short film, “Coffee Shop Names,” was a finalist for the Tribeca X award at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival and was acquired by HBO Max for debut in September 2021.

He was nominated for an Annie Award for writing in 2020.

Along with the public event, Sethi’s campus visit will include small-group sessions with film production classes and students in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications.
