Bellisario College students earn accolades from Broadcast Education Association

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A special newscast, several segments, individual reporters and a promotional video were among a half-dozen award-winning entries from Penn Students honored during the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts.

The newscast, “Centre County Report in Estonia,” earned two awards. It was named Best of Festival and finished first in the Television News Magazine Category. The 51-minute show, produced as part of an international reporting course, was led by students Matt Noah, Hannah Markovich and Logan Buourandas.

Markovich also produced “Girl Power: Women Empowerment in Estonia,” which earned an Award of Excellence.

A segment, “Estonia’s Past Influences Current Military Stance,” by Carlos Garcia, finished third in the Television Long Feature Category.

Garcia added another individual award with his second-place finish among Video Sports Talent (Anchor/Host).

In addition, a promotional video produced as part of a 400-level brand storytelling course earned and Award of Excellence. The enrollment video for St. John Elementary School, was produced by Shiliang Gao, Madelyn Isenberg, Jacob Malizio, Amanda Weissman, Aidan Torok and Sophie Ziegler.

The Broadcast Education Association is the premier international academic media organization, driving insights, excellence in media production and career advancement for educators, students and professionals. The association’s publications, annual convention, web-based programs and regional district activities provide opportunities for juried production competition and presentation of current scholarly research related to aspects of the electronic media.
