Expert to address FCC's impact on public relations efforts

A Penn State alumnus who has crafted an award-winning career in public relations will return to campus to present a free public lecture about the impact of updated Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations on public relations (PR) efforts.

Alan Marcus, a senior vice president who leads the New York office of SHIFT Communications, will present the annual Ben Bronstein Lecture in Ethics and Public Relations -- titled "FCC Compliance in Public Relations: How to Strike the Right Balance; Implications; Dos and Don'ts" -- at 7 p.m. March 23, in Foster Auditorium of Paterno Library.

With more than 20 years of experience, Marcus helps drive business results for SHIFT's consumer technology, lifestyle and business-to-business clients through strategic, cutting-edge PR and social media campaigns. He previously served as a senior vice president at Porter Novelli where he led consumer and B2B communications efforts for consumer technology, personal finance, CPG and retail brands.

Earlier in his career, Marcus served as vice president of public relations and special events for children's luxury retailer, FAO Schwarz, where he led PR efforts for the brand's 40-plus stores, company catalogue and e-commerce initiatives. He earned his bachelor's degree in business from the University in 1993.

The Ben Bronstein Lecture in Ethics and Public Relations, coordinated by the Don Davis Program in Ethical Leadership, housed in the College of Communications, was created by Bronnstein, who earned his Penn State journalism degree in 1961 and has been a longtime supporter of the University. He endowed the lecture in order to support ethics-related events as part of the core mission of the college.

Bronstein was the founding director of public relations at the Penn State College of Medicine and Hershey Medical Center and held director positions in public relations at two statewide health care associations.

The mission of the Davis Program is to promote professional, academic and personal integrity within the College of Communications community. The program has a special focus on the development of responsibility and integrity among undergraduates as part of their preparation to be principled leaders of media institutions.
