'Expert Opinion' shows Oct. 4, 18 address women athletes, stadiums

University Park, Pa. -- How do women benefit from playing collegiate sports, and what challenges have athletes, coaches and reporters faced since Title IX was enacted in 1972 through the present day? What issues do stadium designers look at from the ground up, and how do today's rowdy fans and post-9/11 security concerns affect structural decisions and game-day operations? Two noontime "Expert Opinion with Graham Spanier" shows on the Big Ten Network aim to find out.

For the Monday, Oct. 4, show on "Women in Collegiate Athletics," Spanier, host of the show and president of Penn State, welcomes guests Heather Tarr, Marie Hardin and Bonnie Bremner Pettigrew. Tarr is head coach of the University of Washington's 2009 national champion softball program. Hardin, associate director of Penn State's John Curley Center for Sports Journalism, researches diversity, ethics and professional practices in sports coverage, with an emphasis on women journalists' experience and values. Bremner Pettigrew is a former Penn State and professional women's volleyball player and the University's first four-time All-American. She runs Next Level Athletes development with her husband, former Penn State football player Titcus Pettigrew. Watch a preview here.

For the Monday, Oct. 18, show focusing on "Design and Management of Stadiums," Spanier is joined by Jay Manning, Dennis Forsyth and Mark Bodenschatz. Manning is a retired FBI special agent and former director of security for the Washington Redskins pro football program. Forsyth, an architect with SRG Partnership in Seattle, has helped design several U.S. athletic facilities including Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners, and Seattle's renovated Key Arena. Bodenschatz is a professional engineer and associate athletic director of facilities at Penn State. Watch a preview of the show here.
