UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — An award-winning book by a Penn State faculty member has added another accolade.

“Experiencing the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Children, Peace Communication and Socialization,” written by Yael Warshel, has been selected for the National Communication Association’s 2023 Book of the Year Award in Ethics. The award was presented Nov. 16 at the association’s convention in National Harbor, Maryland.

Warshel is an assistant professor of telecommunications and media industries in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, an assistant professor of African studies in the College of the Liberal Arts, a research associate in the Rock Ethics Institute, and an affiliate faculty member of international affairs, international and comparative education, and Middle Eastern studies.

She also is vice president of the American Institute for Maghrib Studies, the North and Northwest African Studies Association, and a Stanford University-University of California at Berkeley John Gardner Public Service Fellow.

The award from the National Communication Association (NCA) is the fourth for the book, which was previously honored by NCA in 2022 with the Sue DeWine Distinguished Scholarly Book Award. The book was published by Cambridge University Press in 2021.

Warshel conducted field research inside Israel, the West Bank and Gaza for the book — studying the daily life of young people in the conflict zone. The book then narrates daily life in the conflict zone for different perspectives.

The NCA, based in Washington, D.C., advances communication as the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific and aesthetic inquiry. The association advocates for public policy, organizes programs that serve and engage public audiences, provides scholars with teaching and learning tools and expertise, and publishes 11 academic journals. It’s annual conference attracts about 5,000 attendees.
