Berks IST professor honored as INFORMS Volunteer Service Award recipient

WYOMISSING, Pa. — Abdullah Konak, distinguished professor of information sciences and technology at Penn State Berks, received the 2022 INFORMS Volunteer Service Award in October during the annual ceremony in Indianapolis.

The INFORMS Volunteer Service award honors exceptional volunteer service, engagement, and impact. Konak served as vice president, treasurer, secretary, and council member in the Telecommunications and Network Analytics section of INFORMS. Additionally, he was a key member in organizing the Telecommunications and Network Analytics Conference.

His research focus is on analyzing, modeling and optimizing complex systems using computational intelligence, probability, statistics and operations research techniques. Konak has published academic papers on topics ranging from network design, system reliability, cybersecurity, predictive analytics and more.

Konak has also worked as a principal investigator on sponsored projects with the National Science Foundation, the National Security Agency, the U.S. Department of Labor, and VentureWell. He teaches courses on database management systems, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, agent-based modeling and entrepreneurship.

INFORMS is the leading international association for professionals in operations research, analytics, management science, economics, behavioral science, statistics, artificial intelligence, data science, applied mathematics, and other relevant fields.
