WYOMISSING, Pa. — Tommaso Giovannelli, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at Lehigh University, will speak about how machine learning models used in data-driven decision-making applications can be subject to different sources of bias that result in social injustice, on Monday, Feb. 20, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in room 248, Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building at Penn State Berks.
Giovannelli will review examples of AI (artificial intelligence) applications in which fairness is an important concern (e.g., credit scoring, college admission, hiring decisions, criminal justice), and present quantitative strategies to mitigate biases and ensure accurate and fair machine learning models. This event is free and open to the public but attendees must register in advance.
Giovannelli earned his doctorate operations research in May 2021 from Sapienza University of Rome. From January 2020 to May 2021, he was a visiting scholar at ISE at Lehigh.
