Jessica James had long been interested in military service but also wanted to attend college. When she learned during a career fair at her high school that she could do both simultaneously, she decided to enlist in the Army National Guard during the summer between her junior and senior years of high school.
“My grandpa was in the military, and my family has always been very patriotic,” James said. “I've always loved the idea of serving for something bigger than yourself.”
She participated in drills as a high school senior but basic training had to wait. Right after graduating, she left for six months of basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.
Once she returned to the Philadelphia region, James chose to attend Penn State Brandywine. She was attracted to the campus in part because of the successful softball program.
“I loved the softball program and the fact that they cared about my academics, not just my athletics,” James said. “I really liked the environment at Brandywine, and I liked that it was small. It felt homey in a way.”
James’ love of sports started at an early age — “I tried every single sport as a kid,” she said, encouraged by her parents to try new things. She played soccer from age 5 until high school and played softball through middle school and high school.
