Celebrating National Native American Heritage Month at Penn State's campuses

Penn State student organizations and units at campuses across the commonwealth will be holding events in honor of National Native American Heritage Month, celebrated during the month of November. Here’s a look at some of the events taking place at the University’s campuses.

This list will be updated as events are added throughout the month; the University community is invited to send diversity and inclusion events at Penn State for consideration to DiversityEvents@psu.edu.

PENN STATE UNIVERSITY PARK

Now (through March 2020) — The University Libraries presents an exhibit, “Indigenous Roots/Routes: Contested Histories, Contemporary Experiences,” reflecting on the past five centuries of colonization and cultural exchange between Indigenous Peoples, Europeans, Africans and, later, Americans. Special Collections Exhibition Gallery, 104 Paterno Library.

Nov. 7 — Clara Drummond, curator and exhibitions coordinator for the Eberly Family Special Collections Library, will offer a free, public tour of the exhibition, “Indigenous Roots/Routes: Contested Histories, Contemporary Experiences." 2 p.m., meet at the Special Collections Exhibition Gallery, 104 Paterno Library.

Save the Date — Campus community members can mark their 2020 calendars for the 16th annual Penn State Powwow, which will be held April 25-26, 2020.

PENN STATE DUBOIS

Nov. 12Lawrence Kaibetoney, a cultural ambassador and teacher in Navajo culture, will share Navajo history and cultures with his audience. Kaibetoney operates a ranch that has been in his family since the 1800s, nestled between sheer, red cliffs, and embodies the centuries-old Navajo tradition of raising sheep on this land. 7 p.m., Hiller Auditorium.

PENN STATE FAYETTE

Nov. 19 — The Piscataway Indian Nation Dancers will perform in celebration of National Native American Heritage Month. Free and open to the public. 12:15 p.m., Student Center, Williams Building.

PENN STATE YORK

Nov. 12 — American Indian dance, drum and song will all be a part of Penn State York’s celebration of Native American Heritage Month, when the Piscataway Nation Singers & Dancers perform in this free, public event. 12:15 p.m., Main Classroom Building conference center.
