Creamery rolls out flavor contest runner-up, strawberry cheesecake

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- In celebrating the Creamery’s 150th anniversary, apparently there are no losers. 

Strawberry cheesecake with graham cracker crust, the runner-up in this summer’s pick the anniversary flavor contest, is now available at Berkey Creamery.

From May 24 to June 7, more than 5,300 votes were submitted in a contest to select the ice cream flavor marking the Creamery’s 150th birthday. Birthday cake won with 2,097 votes, narrowly edging strawberry cheesecake with graham cracker crust, which garnered 2,037 votes.

“The new strawberry cheesecake flavor is being well received," said Creamery Manager Tom Palchak, "and though it finished second in the contest, those voters were quite serious about this new flavor and are supporting it as much as our birthday cake ice cream. We’ve just placed our second order for ingredients."

The Creamery began offering birthday cake during the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in July, selling its initial run of 300 gallons in four days. The Creamery is currently accepting suggestions to name the flavor on social media through #Creamery150, paper ballots at the store, and at http://creamery.psu.edu/150/anniversary-flavor

The flavor mix’s “pillows” of graham cracker have proven so popular that all the Creamery’s cheesecake varieties will soon include the ingredient, according to Palchak.

Multiple events and activities have been organized around the Creamery’s anniversary, including the creation of a Flavor Passport, allowing people to mark the flavors they try, and an exhibit of Creamery artifacts.
