Empowering Advocates: Penn State's Gender Equity Center Ambassador Program

UNIVERSITY, Pa. — Penn State is committed to fostering a campus community that prioritizes safety, support and respect for all. The Gender Equity Center invites staff and faculty to take part in this mission with the Gender Equity Center Ambassador Program. This initiative allows staff and faculty to become proactive leaders within their units, championing the "It's On Us" message and serving as a crucial link to the Gender Equity Center for students.

The program plays a crucial role in supporting students and connecting them with critical resources. By expanding the network of ambassadors, Penn State aims to enhance its capacity to address issues related to interpersonal violence effectively. This initiative aligns with the University's commitment to providing comprehensive support for survivors, raising awareness, and fostering a community where everyone is actively involved in preventing and addressing these challenges. Ambassadors play a vital role in promoting awareness, prevention and response to issues such as sexual violence, dating violence, harassment and stalking.

“One of the key benefits of this training, is that staff and faculty will learn how to have a trauma-informed conversation with a student they suspect may have been sexually assaulted or be in an abusive relationship, and then they can practice their new skills throughout breakout sessions in the training,” said Yvette Wilson, director of the Gender Equity Center at Penn State.

Becoming a Gender Equity Ambassador involves a comprehensive two-hour training session. This training equips participants with practical skills to effectively support survivors of interpersonal violence. Ambassadors learn how to be a resource in times of crisis, offer appropriate support and guide survivors to the Gender Equity Center. The training also covers essential topics such as addressing victim-blaming behavior, acquiring bystander intervention skills, and becoming a valuable source of information for colleagues.

As more individuals join the ranks of Gender Equity Ambassadors, Penn State takes a significant step forward in fostering a campus environment where everyone plays a role in building a safer and more supportive community.
