UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State College of Earth and Mineral Sciences will host an open discussion and talks by authors Russell Gold and Seamus McGraw about the fracking industry, climate change, and the Marcellus Shale from 2:30-4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum, located on the ground floor of Deike Building on the University Park campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Russell Gold, a Pulitzer Prize finalist and energy reporter for The Wall Street Journal, is the author of the 2015-16 Penn State Reads book, “The Boom: How Fracking Ignited the American Energy Revolution and Changed the World,” which chronicles the fracking industry’s rise from obscurity to industry dominance. Terry Engelder, professor of geosciences, is a character in the book.

Seamus McGraw is a journalist and author. His book “The End of Country: Dispatches from the Frack Zone” depicts the compelling story about the epic battle for control of one of the richest natural gas deposits the world has ever known: the Marcellus Shale.

McGraw has also written “Betting the Farm on a Drought: Stories from the Front Line of Climate Change,” a lively, thought-provoking book that lays out the whole story of climate change — the science, the math, and, most importantly, the human stories of people fighting both the climate and their own deeply held beliefs to find creative solutions to a host of environmental challenges. Michael Mann, distinguished professor of meteorology, and Klaus Keller, professor of geosciences, were interviewed for the book.

This event is made possible by the Lattman Visiting Scholar of Science and Society Endowment.

Gold will also speak at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 12, in Alumni Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center. A book signing will follow the lecture.

The public is also invited to attend “Meet Russell Gold, author of ‘The Boom,’” an interview with Katie O’Toole, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct.13, at the Days Inn Penn State, located at 240 South Pugh Street in downtown State College.
