Event celebrates student-supported HUB-Robeson Center addition, renovation

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Student leaders and University officials truly took a swing at the HUB-Robeson Center in an unconventional "building-breaking" ceremony Thursday (Sept. 19) in an event held to recognize Penn State students' support in the evolution of their student union, the HUB-Robeson Center.

Final plans, approved by the Board of Trustees in May, include a 54,800-square-foot addition and 52,000-square-foot renovation. The $44.6 million project will be paid for primarily from student facilities fees, HUB reserves, Food Services funds and Penn State Bookstore reserves.

University Park Undergraduate Association President Katelyn Mullen and Assembly Chair Anthony Panichelli, Graduate Student Association President Scott Rager, THON Executive Director Ryan Patrick and Panhellenic Council President Rachel Francescino joined several University officials including Vice President of Student Affairs Damon Sims to swing gold-painted sledgehammers against actual pieces of concrete from the HUB-Robeson Center construction site.

Following the ceremony, attendees enjoyed refreshments and entertainment by the Ram Squad, one of many student organizations that may benefit from expanded performing and multipurpose spaces included in the plans. Also included is a green roof atop the Penn State Bookstore.

Construction and renovation is expected to continue through the 2013-2014 academic year, with an expected completion of final renovations by summer 2015.
