Expert on conflict resolution, social justice to talk about ‘peacebuilding’

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — An author, expert and scholar with ample experience in areas such as conflict resolution and social justice will present a free public lecture about “peacebuilding” on Penn State's University Park campus later this month.

David J. Smith, president of the Forage Center for Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Education, will address “Comm Jobs in Peacebuilding” at 6 p.m. March 24 in 162 Willard Building. The visit is coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs in the College of Communications and AHANA — the African, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American student club.

Smith has more than 30 years of experience as an author, college professor, consultant and lawyer. He has taught and consulted at all levels of higher education with more than 150 colleges and universities, and has given more than 400 talks on conflict resolution, international education, peacebuilding and social justice.

He is currently finishing a manuscript focusing on conflict and peace careers for undergraduates. 

Smith earned his juris doctorate at the University of Baltimore, master's degree in conflict analysis and resolution from George Mason University, and bachelor's degree in political science and urban affairs from American University.
