Penn State's Student Red Cross Club is gearing up for the "Fight For Life" blood donor challenge against Ohio State in April. During this time, Penn State and Ohio State will take part in a friendly competition to collect the most units of blood throughout the month.
The school that wins this competition will claim bragging rights as not only the best collegiate donation program in the Big 10, but possibly also in the nation. This is the fifth year of the Fight For Life campaign, and it is expected to be the biggest yet. Thus far, the Fight For Life record is 3-1 with Penn State in the lead.
"Although Fight For Life is a competition between two rival schools, the real goal here is to come together and save as many lives as possible,” said Marissa Scheiner, public relations officer of the Student Red Cross Club.
There is now a constant demand for all blood types. Similarly to the Penn State versus Michigan State Blood Donor Challenge that takes place every fall, the American Red Cross hopes that this competition will motivate students to become regular donors. The blood that is collected during the Penn State versus Ohio State Fight For Life challenge will help supply the blood that is needed at hospitals in both the Greater Alleghenies and Central Ohio Regions of the American Red Cross. Due to the fact that a unit of blood only has a shelf life of 42 days, replenishment must be constant, and all donors are extremely appreciated.
Free food including subs, pizza or hamburgers will be served, and T-shirts will be given away to donors while supplies last.
Make an appointment to donate by visiting redcrossblood.org today. If you are not able to donate, but still would like to help out at the drives, feel free to sign up at volunteer.psu.edu/redcross.
