UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Noted filmmaker and lecturer Judy Richardson will present the Africana Research Center's annual Barbara Jordan lecture at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 21, in the Paterno Library's Foster Auditorium.
Her lecture, titled "We shall not be moved: Women in the Civil Rights Movement," will be followed by a book signing.
Richardson has appeared on "Nightline," "Nightwatch," and various other news shows to challenge representations of the African-American community and the civil rights movement in the film "Mississippi Burning." A former staff worker with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC); co-editor of "Hands on the Freedom Plow," which featured the stories of 52 SNCC women activists; and one of the producers of the 14-hour "Eyes on the Prize" series, Richardson will highlight powerful stories of the strong local leaders in the civil rights movement, many of whom were women and young people, who led and sustained the southern movement of the 1960s. Women and young people were at the center of that earlier movement in the same way that women and young people are driving today's Black Lives Matter movement.
