IRONMAN triathlon on July 2 to impact campus and community roads, campus parking

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The 2023 IRONMAN 70.3 Pennsylvania Happy Valley triathlon will take place this Sunday, July 2, at locations across Centre and Clinton counties, including the Penn State University Park campus.

Comprised of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run in succession, the event will impact numerous campus and community roads and campus parking lots. Those who need to travel on Sunday are encouraged to review the following list of traffic and parking impacts, utilize detour routes if able, and allow for additional travel time to your destination.

Campus road impacts

The following campus road closures will be in effect Sunday, July 2:

3 a.m. - 6 p.m.

  • Curtin Road (University Drive to Porter Road)

8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

  • Elm Road (Bigler Road to Benedict House)

8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

  • Mifflin Road (McKean Road to Burrowes Road)
  • Pollock Road (Mifflin Road to Burrowes Road)

8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

  • Curtin Road (Atherton Street to University Drive)
  • University Drive (Park Avenue to College Avenue)

8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

  • Hastings Road (McKean Road to University Drive)
  • Linden Road (McKean Road to Bigler Road)

8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

  • McKean Road (Shortlidge Road to Bigler Road)
  • West Campus Drive (Patterson Street to Barnard Street)
  • Shortlidge Road (Curtin Road to Pollock Road)

8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

  • College Avenue westbound on-ramp to University Drive

Commuter Drive between Curtin Road and Dauer Drive will also be closed beginning 8 a.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday.

Campus parking closures

A section of Stadium West near Gate B at Beaver Stadium and the north section of Jordan East are currently closed and will remain closed through Tuesday, July 4.

The following lots will be closed on Sunday with no access into or out of the lots:

The following lots will have limited access with a single entrance/exit on Bigler Road at Curtin Road (entry and exit will only be permitted when it is possible for vehicles to cross safely between event participants):

Permit holders who need to park on campus on Sunday are strongly encouraged to use the Nittany, East, West and HUB decks. These areas are available to all permit holders at no charge on weekends by scanning the permit barcode at in-lane entry and exit machines. A single crossing to access Eisenhower Deck and other areas inside the running route will be maintained on Bigler Road at Curtin Road. Crossing Curtin Road will only be allowed between athletes, and delays may be significant.
