UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Students in the Penn State College of the Liberal Arts are invited to a Meet the Dean presentation and reception on Wednesday, Sept. 4. The event, which will be hosted by the Liberal Arts Undergraduate Council (LAUC), will be held at 3 p.m. in Freeman Auditorium in the HUB-Robeson Center. The presentation will be followed by an informal reception in the Noontime Lounge from 4-5 p.m.

This will be students’ first opportunity to hear from and meet new dean Clarence Lang. Lang started his tenure as the Susan Welch Dean of the College of the Liberal Arts on July 1. Prior to that, he was the interim dean of the College of the Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas. In addition to being interim dean, he was the Dean’s Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the Department of African and African-American Studies and a professor of American studies.

LAUC, which was established in 1975, is the official governing body for undergraduate students in the College of the Liberal Arts. The group organizes events for current students and meets with the College of the Liberal Arts administration to discuss students’ needs and concerns.

Sarthak Vij, a sophomore majoring in economics and mathematics, is the president of LAUC for the 2019-20 school year.

“Having a new dean associated with the college is an exciting thing,” said Vij. “When we heard that Dean Lang would be taking over the position, the entire team was excited to host him. This excitement, we felt, could be shared with hundreds of liberal arts students. We look forward to hosting the dean and effectively helping students in having the first opportunity to interact with him. Through this event, we hope students become more aware of their college’s dean and vice versa.”

Meet the Dean is open to all students, faculty and staff in the College of the Liberal Arts. Questions can be directed to Kathy Swidwa at kea5102@psu.edu
