‘Lunch with the Penn State Humphrey Fellows’ to be held on Jan. 27

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The State College branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will present “Lunch with the Penn State Humphrey Fellows: International Perspectives on Women in Society” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, in the Alumni Fireside Lounge at The Nittany Lion Inn.

The program will feature two Penn State Humphrey Fellows: Cuba's Mayda Ramos Alemán and China’s Xinping He.

Alemán is the adviser to the Ministry of Education in Cuba for teaching English as a foreign language. She is focused on the development of English learning in Cuba, curriculum development, and applied linguistics.

Born in Beijing, China, He worked in business management in Beijing for eight years before joining BN Vocational School in 2010. She is currently the principal of BN Vocational School Sanya in Hainan, China.

The reservation deadline to attend the lunch is Friday, Jan. 20. Those interested in attending should send a check for $22, made payable to “AAUW, State College Branch,” to Christine Bishop, 205 First Avenue, State College, PA 16801. The annual event is co-sponsored by the Penn State Humphrey Fellowship Program, Penn State Commission for Women, Altrusa International of Centre County, Community Diversity Group, Global Connections and Soroptimist International of Centre County.

Established in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter, the Humphrey Fellowship Program is a one-year, non-degree program that combines academic and professional development opportunities for accomplished, mid-career professionals from designated countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East. Each year, the Penn State College of Education hosts 10 fellows seeking to advance their education, gain professional training and work-related experiences, and provide public service.
