UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Office of Physical Plant will conduct a second spraying operation for bagworms this evening, June 17, at University Park. Ground spraying of single trees and evergreen hedges will begin at Innovation Park, West Campus, and areas on the north side of Park Avenue near the water treatment facility and USB I and II at 9 p.m. and last until approximately 6 a.m. Thursday.
The Office of Physical Plant is taking this opportunity with low populations on campus to address an increasing problem of bagworms that have been seen over the past couple of seasons. Spraying will involve a biocontrol product listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute. It is an organic solution that contains naturally occurring soil bacteria specific to controlling leaf-eating caterpillars.
OPP thanks the campus community for understanding the need and cooperating with this important program aimed at preserving the campus’ trees.
