UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Whether students have specific financial goals or want some advice on how to get started managing their personal finances, staff at the Sokolov-Miller Family Financial and Life Skills Center are available for private, one-on-one meetings at no additional cost.
Becky Moore, an education program specialist with the center, said that no question is too small, and no goal unimportant.
“My job is not to tell people what to do with their money,” Moore said. “My job is to give you guidance and direction so that you can make sound financial decisions to meet your needs and goals.”
Moore, along with student ambassadors and other center staff, is now accepting appointments through Starfish for private, one-on-one meetings on Zoom. A link to schedule an appointment can be found at financialliteracy.psu.edu.
Rachel Taylor, a biological and agricultural engineering second-year doctoral candidate, has been meeting with Moore to work on how to better her budgeting and saving skills.
“I am acutely aware of my financial life being a first-generation college and graduate school student,” Taylor said. “While Penn State does provide me a stipend, it doesn’t seem to go very far. I wanted to meet with a professional so they could assess how I was doing with my budgeting, help me meet my savings goals and prepare for repayment of my student loans. Financial stress is hard to confront, but they can help make it easier and give you the tools to succeed.”
Moore said, “Every single person should have access to financial literacy to understand pay, benefits and investing for retirement. Those are things that are going to be thrown at you when you leave Penn State.”
The Sokolov-Miller Family Financial and Life Skills Center offers services to the entire Penn State community and is part of Penn State Undergraduate Education, the academic administrative unit that provides leadership and coordination for University-wide programs and initiatives in support of undergraduate teaching and learning at Penn State.
