Penn State annual Veterans Day ceremony set for Nov. 11 at Old Main, livestream

Ceremony will also be livestreamed as part of Penn State’s 10th annual Military Appreciation Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A ceremony to honor the service and sacrifices of veterans of the U.S. armed forces will take place at 11:11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, on the front steps of Old Main at the University Park campus. The ceremony also will be streamed online at watch.psu.edu/MAW.  

The Penn State Student Veteran Organization organizes the annual Veterans Day ceremony, which is free and open to the public. The ceremony will recognize not only veterans at Penn State, but also those throughout Pennsylvania and the nation. 

The event will feature the ROTC Color Guard and guest speakers Capt. George Oliver, Penn State alumnus; Dexter Mills, president of Omega Delta Sigma, the veterans fraternity at Penn State; and Kyle Larson, president of the Penn State Student Veteran Organization.  

Oliver, who currently serves as an Army ROTC instructor at University Park, has 18 years of combined service in the Army and National Guard. He first enlisted in the Florida Army National Guard in 2003 and then became an officer in the Army Reserves, serving aboard medical evacuation helicopters. Oliver received a bachelor of science in criminal justice from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 2008 and a bachelor of science in vertebrate physiology from Penn State in 2018.  

The ceremony is part of Penn State’s annual Military Appreciation Week, which celebrates the Pennsylvania National Guard with festivities for Penn State and local community members. Additional Veterans Day events on Nov. 11 include:  

  • Employee and Student Military Service Appreciation Breakfast  

  • “Leadership in Challenging Circumstances” presentation by Navy surgeon General Bruce Gillingham via Zoom 

  • Military Appreciation Hockey Game
