UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The LGBTQA Student Resource Center is celebrating National Coming Out Week with programs and events focused on gender identity and expression from Oct. 9-13. National Coming Out Day takes place every year on Oct. 11 to celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) or as an ally. This year will mark the 29th anniversary of the day.
This year’s program includes a variety of events from speakers to a HUB takeover.
- Monday, Oct. 9: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. HUB Takeover
- Monday, Oct. 9: At 7 p.m. in Freeman Auditorium, Shaashawn Dial-Snowden will present a workshop titled "I Am! – Living, Loving & Learning."
- Tuesday, Oct. 10: From 3-5 p.m. Transportation Services will host an LGBTQ and Women’s Bike Workshop at 117 Weston Community Center.
- Tuesday, Oct. 10 : From 4:30-6:30 p.m. the School of Theatre will host Joseph Osmundson for "Capsid: A Love Song" in 125 Borland Building.
- Wednesday, Oct. 11: Noon to 1 p.m. Coming Out Rally on the steps of Old Main
- Wednesday, Oct. 11: Zeke Thomas will present #SupportSurvivors at 7 p.m. in Freeman Auditorium in the HUB-Robeson Center. Thomas is a DJ, producer, and LGBTQ and sexual assault victims’ rights advocate.
- Thursday, Oct. 12: Queer and Trans People of Color will host Gender Expression and Body Positivity at 6:30 p.m. in 260 Willard Building.
- Thursday, Oct. 12: The LGBTQA Student Roundtable will sponsor a Student Drag Show at 10 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
- Friday, Oct. 13: As part of Parents & Families Weekend, the LGBTQA Student Resource Center will host an open house from 3-5 p.m. in 101 Boucke Building.
The week’s events are coordinated by the LGBTQA Student Resource Center, a unit of Penn State Student Affairs, as well as other campus partners. The center provides a range of programming, education, information and advocacy services to create and maintain an open, safe and inclusive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students at Penn State.
