Penn State Hershey Breast Center offers 24-hour mammogram scheduling

Every year, events during October bring awareness of the need for early detection and research of breast cancer, as well as to honor those diagnosed with the disease.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was created in 1985 by members of many different health care groups. The first program was a week-long event that included communicating with Congress about the need for access to mammograms. Today, advocates participate in fundraisers, luncheons and other events where their voices can be heard and money can be raised.

The message is the same year-after-year: All women age 40 and older should have an annual mammogram at an accredited Breast Center. Mammograms are still the best tool for finding breast cancer early. It also is important for women to do monthly self breast exams and see their medical provider for a clinical breast and pelvic exam every year. With early detection, breast cancer is greater than 90 percent curable.

If you or someone you love have no medical insurance, don’t let your health suffer. There are agencies in Pennsylvania willing to help. Call 800-215-7494 to see if you are eligible for a free mammogram.

Now, Penn State Hershey Breast Center offers 24-hour scheduling for screening mammograms through the CareLine at 800-243-1455. Call today to schedule yours, or pass this information along to the women you love.
