Nichola Gutgold, professor of communication arts and sciences at Penn State Lehigh Valley, gave a presentation called “Women World Leaders” on March 27 in honor of Women’s History Month at the Lehigh Valley campus. This program was co-hosted by the Office of Student Affairs and the Campus Engagement Committee.

“Women World Leaders” was about women leaders all over the world and the barriers female politicians face when they run for political office. Gutgold talked about gender discrimination, stereotypes, and women facing more scrutiny than men. She also spoke about the women who plan to run for office in 2020.

About 30 students, faculty and staff who attended were able to ask Gutgold questions after the presentation and share their own insight on women leaders.

“There are many women who have been leaders that we don’t know about,” Gutgold said. “I would encourage students to research these women so that they can learn about who they are and how experienced they are.”

Gutgold is an internationally recognized scholar on the rhetoric of women in non-traditional fields. She has been a visiting professor at California State University, Chico, and University of Zagreb, Croatia, where she interviewed President Kolinda Grabar- Kitarovic, and has taught at universities in China and Germany.  She is the recipient of numerous awards for her teaching and research, which focuses on the rhetoric of women in male-dominated fields.
