UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — To celebrate Women’s History Month, the Gender Equity Center, the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity, and Penn State Transportation Services are offering a bike workshop for women and the LGTBQ+ community at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, at the Bike Den, located in the West Parking Deck at University Park.

This workshop will cover discussions on bike safety and tips for cyclists, as well as a discussion titled “Ride or Die: The Forgotten History of Bicycles and Feminism.”

“[Transportation Services] reached out to [us] about wanting to implement a women and queer-focused night for the Bike Den,” said Becca Geiger, assistant director at the Gender Equity Center. “While the space is open to everyone, no matter their sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation, there are historical barriers to women and queer folx accessing and utilizing such spaces and feeling welcome.”

This workshop will be the first in a series titled “Pride in Your Ride,” with a Pride Month theme night scheduled for April at the Bike Den.

“We are really excited to partner with the Gender Equity Center and the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity on this workshop series focused on encouraging and supporting women and queer folx in the biking community,” said Cecily Zhu, sustainable transportation manager at Transportation Services. “We want the Bike Den to be a resource for everyone in our community.”
