MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine’s Common Read Committee will kick off the 2015-16 academic year by hosting a screening of the documentary "Plastic Paradise: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch," followed by a discussion about environmental impact with Eric Stein, associate professor at Penn State Great Valley, at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 in Room 103 of the Tomeszko Classroom Building.

"Plastic Paradise: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch" is an independent documentary film that chronicles Angela Sun's personal journey of discovery to one of the most remote places on earth, Midway Atoll, to uncover the truth behind the mystery of the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch.” Along the way she encounters scientists, celebrities, legislators and activists who shed light on what our society's vast consumption of disposable plastic is doing to our oceans, and what it may be doing to our health. This documentary is also available online to anyone with a Penn State login ID and password.

Following the screening, Stein, associate professor of management science and information systems management, and a researcher on energy policy and sustainable ventures, will moderate a discussion about the themes in the movie in relation to this year’s Common Read book, "Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash" by Edward Humes.

All event attendees are encouraged to use the hashtag #PSUBWGarbology to post on social media about the event and on-campus sustainable practices. All suitable posts relating to the hashtag theme will be gathered and shared on Penn State Brandywine’s Storify about Garbology.
