‘Schooling the World’ screening, discussion planned for Oct. 6

Documentary film maker Carol Black will visit Penn State on Monday, Oct. 6, to attend a free public screening of her film, “Schooling the World: The White Man’s Last Burden.” Black will participate in a discussion following the screening, which will last from 7 to 9 p.m. in 113 IST Building.

Filmed in the northern Indian Himalayas, the documentary tells the story through the voices of Buddhist Ladakhis, of a culture whose way of life and language are threatened by both the ethos and institution of school. Featured guests in the documentary include anthropologist Wade Davis, activist and author Vandana Shiva and linguist and activist Helena Norberg-Hodge.

Any one interested in the impact of global economics on indigenous cultures, the Western socioeconomic paradigm and its effects on traditional sustainable agriculture, ecological knowledge, the disruption of families and communities and ancient spiritual traditions should find the film an educative contribution and is invited to attend the event.
