Second annual ‘Steps for State’ walk to Harrisburg set for March 29-31

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — After last year’s successful walk, the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) will be organizing Steps for State again this year in anticipation of Capital Day on March 31. Steps for State is an event organized by UPUA in which students walk from State College to Harrisburg to advocate for more state funding. The 114-mile walk culminates in Capital Day, where representatives will meet with state legislators to discuss the impact that increased state appropriations have on Penn State.

The walk begins on the steps of Old Main at noon on March 29, and students, faculty and community members are encouraged to attend this send-off. Walkers arrive on the steps of the State Capitol in Harrisburg at 8 a.m. on March 31 after crossing the bridge into the city with all of the other Capital Day attendees. UPUA representatives hope this walk will draw attention to the lack of state funding over the past few years.

“Increased state appropriations is something the UPUA cares deeply about,” said Steps for State organizer John Lombardo. “Steps for State is a tangible way to make our voice heard to state legislators and the Penn State community.”

The UPUA will be posting updates on both Steps for State and Capital Day throughout the week on its Facebook and Twitter pages. Any questions regarding Steps for State should be directed toward John Lombardo at johnlombardo@psu.edu.
