UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A section of Park Avenue between North Atherton Street and North Allen Street along the north end of Penn State’s University Park campus will be closed for utility repairs starting Monday, May 8, through approximately Friday, May 19, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
PennDOT is partnering with State College Borough to repair a storm sewer pipe and the sanitary sewer system in the area.
While that section of Park Avenue is closed, a detour will be in place directing drivers as follows:
- Northbound drivers will use University Drive, East College Avenue, and North Atherton Street.
- Southbound drivers will use North Atherton Street, East Beaver Avenue, and University Drive.
North Allen Street/Allen Road will remain open and will be accessible from East Park Avenue to the University Park campus and the East College Heights neighborhood. Campus access also will continue to be available from North Atherton Street via Curtin Road.
Motorists will need to remain alert for stopped or slowed traffic as they travel through the detour. This area sees a high volume of traffic, so motorists should expect travel delays. PennDOT is encouraging drivers to remain patient. Signage will be in place to direct drivers along the detour.
PennDOT said the work is expected to be completed before May 19, but all work is weather dependent. Traffic traveling around the Park Avenue closure after May 15 also could be impacted by a short local eastbound detour on the Atherton Street project, according to a PennDOT news release.
