UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Crews from Penn State's Office of Physical Plant are working to repair a sinkhole that developed July 18 along the sidewalk and a portion of the northbound lane on a small section of Bigler Road on the University Park campus. A detour is in place, and repairs are expected to last about two weeks, through Aug. 2. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.

A small section of Bigler Road has been closed while repairs take place, from the intersection with Pollock Road to the intersection with McKean Road. A detour, in place now, guides motorists around the area using McKean Road.

Beginning Tuesday (July 21) morning, one-lane traffic will be maintained with flaggers through this section of Bigler Road in the southbound lane. However, because lengthy delays are expected in this area, vehicles are strongly encouraged to use the McKean Road detour until Bigler Road reopens to full traffic.

The previously-scheduled closure of Hastings Road from the intersection with Bigler and McKean roads to just west of the entrance to Lot Yellow M at Lasch Building also will begin at 6 a.m. July 21 and will continue through Thursday, July 30.

Access to Nittany Apartments and Lot 42, Lot Orange F at East Area Lockers, Lot Orange C near the former Greenberg Ice Pavilion, and Lot Yellow T at Pollock Commons will remain available, but drivers will only be able to reach these sections by traveling south on Bigler Road to the detour at McKean Road, or by traveling east on Pollock Road to the section of Bigler Road south of the detour. Access to Lot Yellow M at Lasch Building will be available only by traveling west on Hastings Road from University Drive.

During the closure all CATA bus routes that normally travel on this section of Bigler Road will be re-routed to University Drive. Blue Loop service will be re-routed south on University Drive to College Avenue.

Stops at the White Building, Computer Building, Nittany Apartments and the Millennium Science Complex will be out of service through Sunday, Aug. 2, as repairs take place.

Campus Shuttle stop No. 5 at the intersection of Pollock and Bigler is closed and will reopen Monday, Aug. 3. Until then, riders can go to stop No. 4 at the Computer Building or stop No. 6 at Thomas Building.
