UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Transportation Services and the Borough of State College have announced several updates related to the recently launched Spin E-Bike Share program.

Bike fleet expansion

Last week, the phased plan to expand the Spin fleet from 75 to 300 electric-assist bikes was completed. To accommodate the increased number of bikes, additional off-campus deployment points have been added and are visible when using the Spin app. Riders are encouraged to contact Spin through the app if they have requests for additional deployment locations.

Unlock fees, membership and discounted rates for limited-income riders

With the e-bike fleet now at its planned capacity, Spin’s standard $1 bike unlock fee will resume beginning Monday, Oct. 25. As previously announced, that fee was waived during Spin’s initial launch period. Spin users can continue to have bike unlock fees waived by signing up for a Spin membership through the Spin app for just $6.99 per month. The 25 cents per minute rental rate will still apply for all users.

Penn State students and employees and local community members with limited incomes may apply for the new Spin Access program, which provides discounted fares for those who qualify. Spin Access also provides access to bikes for people without smartphones, mobile location services or credit cards.

Free late night and Sunday rides

As part of Transportation Services’ expanded service offerings in response to CATA’s recently announced temporary service reductions, beginning Oct. 25 Spin e-bike rentals will be available to all riders with no unlock or rental fees every night from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. and all day on Sundays until further notice, courtesy of Transportation Services. Riders must first sign up for a Spin account through the Spin app.
