UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Transportation Services will host daily biking events during Welcome Week for students, faculty and staff to learn about navigating across campus via bike and more about the biking resources available at University Park.

Welcome Week biking events will kick off on Monday, Aug. 22, with a Bike Registration event at the Bike Den from 10 a.m. to noon. The Bike Den is located on the ground floor of the West Deck. Bike Den staff will be available to help cyclists register their bikes, which is required in accordance with Centre Region and University policy. Registration assists University and local police return lost and stolen bikes to their owners when found and assists Transportation Services with improving the bike program through communications and resource planning. Registration is free and can also be done online at biking.psu.edu. Additional Bike Registration events will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Westgate Building Plaza and Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the Allen Street Gates from 10 a.m. to noon each day.

On Thursday, Aug. 25, the Bike Den will host Women and Queer Night from 6-8 p.m. Held on the last Thursday of each month, this event aims to create a positive environment where people often marginalized in biking culture can meet in a safe and encouraging space to learn more about biking and bike repair and build a sense of community with other cyclists. Free pizza and snacks will be available to attendees.

To conclude Welcome Week’s bike events, the Bike Den will host an Open House from 1-5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26. Penn State students, faculty and staff, as well as local community members, are invited to stop by to learn more about the DIY workshop space; get a free quick check of their bike’s air, brakes and chain; and enjoy some Penn State Bakery cookies.

“The start of the fall semester is a time when many new students and employees are on campus for the first time, while other students, faculty and staff want to start new habits for the year,” said Cecily Zhu, Penn State Transportation Services' sustainable transportation program manager. “Through these events we hope to share the importance of bike registration and information on the many resources available on campus and in the community to make biking a great way to get to, from and around campus.”

These biking events will be among the many free events available to students across campus during Penn State’s Welcome Week. Visit welcomeweek.psu.edu for a complete list of events.
