Over 1,000 Penn Staters participated in 20/20 Energy Challenge, a two-week competition in April, in which faculty and staff practiced several positive energy saving habits, tracking them each day with a pledge sheet. Through simple activities, such as turning off lights in unoccupied rooms, taking the stairs, and putting computers and printers to sleep, the challenge aided Penn Staters to focus on helping Penn State achieve its goal of a 20 percent energy reduction by 2020.
“I had no idea that my computer was not set to sleep when inactive for a period of time,” said one Green Team member commenting about what she learned from Penn State’s 20/20 Energy Challenge.
In all, 26 teams from multiple campuses participated in the challenge. Four Green Teams won by engaging the highest number of non-Green Team participants. OPP’s Design and Construction team and the Penn State Shenango Green Team won the first place prizes of a catered lunch. Teams from the Bursar’s Office and Penn State DuBois won the second prize of a pizza lunch.
