Students, staff and faculty members from Penn State's College of Education share recent research and career achievements.
— Maria Border, instructor of education (workforce education), and Laura Rice, assistant teaching professor of education, presented “Professional Learning, Collaboration, and Collective Inquiry for the Enhancement of Teacher Prep Programs and Professional Development in CTE” at the 2021 Career and Technical Education Research and Professional Development Conference sponsored by the Association for Career and Technical Education Research, Omicron Tau Theta, and the University Council for Workforce and Human Resource Education. The on-site conference was held Nov. 29-30 in New Orleans in conjunction with the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) CareerTech VISION 2021. The virtual session was conducted online Dec. 6-8.
— Janice Byrd, assistant professor of education (counselor education), wrote a post, “Black Undergraduate Women Reflect on What Prepared Them for College” for The Education Trust.
— Jose Cossa, associate professor of education (lifelong learning and adult education), presented "Cosmo-uBuntu Theorizing and Practice in Education: Adult Online and Distance Education in the Movement toward De-Bordering, De-Centering/De-Peripherizing, and Decolonializing" as part of the University of Wisconsin African Studies’ Africa at Noon lecture series.
— Maithreyi Gopalan, assistant professor of education (education and public policy), presented "Health Policies as Education Policies? Impacts of Publicly Funded Health Insurance for Adults on Children's Academic Achievement” as part of the Penn State School of Public Policy’s Fall Speaker Series.
— Gerald K. LeTendre, H.L. Batschelet Chair of Education (educational leadership), has an article, “Teachers in Neoinstitutional and World Culture Theory” in Comparative Education Review.
— Kevin Kinser, head of the Department of Education Policies Studies (EPS) and professor and senior scientist of education (higher education), participated in a report that was recently spotlighted by Inside Higher Ed in an article, “Report Weighs Accountability Measures for For-Profits.”
— Beverly Lindsay, professor emerita of education, organized a panel for the annual Conference of the 75th Anniversary of the Fulbright Programs. The panel was, "African Americans and Innovative Fulbrights on Five Continents," and her presentation was, "Intellectual Migration and Fulbright in Indonesia and Myanmar."
— Jeffrey Matu, instructor of education (learning and performance systems), presented Technical and Vocational Education and Training Models in Africa: A comparative study of TVET practices in Africa and non-African countries” at the 2021 Career and Technical Education Research and Professional Development Conference.
— Dana Mitra, professor of education (educational theory and policy), has a new book, “The Empowered Professor: Breaking the Unspoken Codes of Inequity in Academia.” In the book, Mitra demonstrates how a coaching-focused stance toward faculty development can improve equitable conditions within the university and contribute to faculty retention and well-being.
— Paul Morgan, Harry & Marion Eberly Faculty Fellow and professor of education (educational theory and policy), is serving on the Children and Adults with ADHD (CHADD) Public Policy Committee. CHADD is the nation's leading nonprofit organization serving individuals with ADHD and their families.
— David Passmore, distinguished professor emeritus of education, was interviewed for a news report, “As the pandemic stretches on, job growth in the Pittsburgh area continues to stall” by WESA, Pittsburgh’s NPR news station.
— Kelly Rosinger, assistant professor of education (education and public policy) and research associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education, is the lead author on an article, “The Role of Selective College Admissions Criteria in Interrupting or Reproducing Racial and Economic Inequities” in The Journal of Higher Education. Her co-authors are Karly Ford, assistant professor and research associate of education (higher education); and Junghee Choi, a doctoral candidate in EPS. In addition, Rosinger participated in a podcast, “SAT: Rethinking College Admission Criteria” for HigherEd Rewired.
— Beth Rhymestine, assistant teaching professor of education (learning and performance systems), presented “Career Planning Utilizing SMART Goals, Intention Setting, and Vision Boards” at the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) CareerTech Vision Conference.
— Mark Threeton, associate professor of education (learning and performance systems), presented “Experiential Learning Practices: Learning by Doing, Or…?” at the 2021 Career and Technical Education Research and Professional Development Conference.
— Carlos Zalaquett, professor of education (counselor education), was invited to be the keynote speaker of the 2021 national psychology awards of the Colegio Colombiano de Psicólogos (COLPSIC), the largest psychological association in Colombia. The awards celebration was held from 6 to 8 p.m. (Colombia time) on Nov. 18 as part of the celebrations of the Día Nacional del Psicólogo (Psychologist National Day).
