Students, staff and faculty members from Penn State's College of Education share recent research and career achievements.
• Maithreyi Gopalan, assistant professor of education (education and public policy) is co-author on a paper, “A customized belonging intervention improves retention of socially disadvantaged students at a broad-access university” recently reviewed by the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC). WWC is an impartial team of methodologists within the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education that reviews research and determines which studies meet rigorous standards and summarize their findings periodically. WWC recently released their report summarizing the educational effects of Social Belonging interventions in college and recognized Gopalan’s and colleagues’ work as “meets standards without reservations” denoting the high quality of research and evidence found in their study.
• Karen Babbs Hollett, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Education Policy Studies (EPS), wrote a guest post, “#KnowBetterDoBetter: A conversation among white parents, advocates and educators about school integration in "School Diversity Notebook.”
• Kevin Kinser, department head of EPS and professor and senior scientist of education (higher education), is quoted in a Higher Ed Dive article, “4 questions for-profit colleges face in 2022.” In addition, he is part of a working group that created a new report from Opportunity America, “Accountability in Higher Education: For-Profit Colleges and Beyond.”
• Dana L. Stuchul, teaching professor of education (curriculum and instruction), is lead author on a new paper, “From fear to hope: learning from BIPOC in hard times — COVID-19, climate collapse & racial violence” published in International Journal of Lifelong Education. Madhu S. Prakash, professor emerita of education (educational theory and policy) is a co-author on the paper.
