Students, staff and faculty members from Penn State's College of Education share recent research and career achievements.

• Alexander Cassell, a doctoral candidate in higher education, was selected to serve on the Rising Scholars board for the Journal of Student Financial Aid.

Erica Frankenberg, professor of education (educational leadership and demography), ranked among the top 200 education scholars according to the 2023 RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings This ranking recognizes her impact on education policy and practice.

• Maithreyi Gopalan, assistant professor of Education and Public Policy, is co-author of a recently published article, “Impacts of publicly funded health insurance for adults on children's academic achievement,” in the Southern Economic Journal. In addition, research by Gopalan and Maria Lewis, associate professor of education (educational leadership), is highlighted in an article in EducationWeek, “What Researchers Learned From Analyzing Decades of Civil Rights Complaints Against Schools.”

• Christina Sophia Gilhuber, a doctoral student in the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education (EPCSE), is lead author of a new article,“Language and communication skills in multilingual children on the autism spectrum: A systematic review,” in National Autistic Society. Tracie Jane Raulston and Kasie Galley, also doctoral students in EPCSE, are co-authors.

• Sean Hembrick, a doctoral student in higher education, is the 2023 recipient of the Fannie Lou Hamer and W.E.B. Dubois Service Scholarship.

Matthew Kelly, assistant professor of education (educational leadership), is lead author of an article, “Misrepresented Funding Gaps in Data for Some States,” in Educational Researcher.

• The Educational Leadership program in the Department of Education Policy Studies, led by Gerald LeTendre, Harry Lawrence Batschelet II Chair of Educational Administration, has been awarded $100,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Education as part of its 2022-2023 Innovative Principal Prep2Practice Grant Program. This program enables Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) with principal preparation programs to experiment with an extended internship/residency component. Additionally, LeTendre is lead author of a report, “Distance Learning and Online Coordination of Service in Pennsylvania’s Rural Schools,” recently released by The Center for Rural Pennsylvania. Peggy Schooling, professor of practice in educational leadership and executive director of the Pennsylvania School Study Council, is a co-author.

Maria Lewis, associate professor of education (educational leadership), and Michael Catterall, an undergraduate student in the educational policy program, co-authored a blog post, “Legal Matters: January 2023 for the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).”

Paul Morgan, Harry & Marion Eberly Faculty Fellow, Professor of Education (educational theory and policy), is lead author of a paper, “Fixed effect estimates of student-teacher racial or ethnic matching in U.S. elementary schools,” in Early Childhood Research Quarterly. Eric Hengyu Hu, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Education Policy Studies, is Morgan’s co-author.
