Students, staff and faculty members from Penn State's College of Education share recent research and career achievements.

·      Mildred Boveda, associate professor of education (special education), has received the 2022 Early Career Award from the Council for Exceptional Children's Division of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Learners. The Early Career Award "serves to honor an individual in the early stages of their career whose scholarship serves to enhance the education and quality of life for individual culturally and linguistically diverse exceptional learners."

·      Suzanne E. Brokloff, an academic adviser in the College of Education, is co-author of the article "From the Classroom to the Advising Office: Exploring Narratives of Advising as Teaching" in the December 2021 edition of NACADA Review, a journal in the profession of academic advising. NACADA Review articles are made available at www.nacadajournal.org online.

·      John J. Cheslock, associate professor of education (higher education) and senior research associate for the Center for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE), is the lead author on a policy report, “Examining the OPM: Form, Function, and Policy Implications.” Kevin Kinser, head of the Department of Education Policies Studies (EPS) and professor and senior scientist of education (higher education), is a co-author on the report.

·      Gilberto Q. Conchas, the Wayne K. and Anita Woolfolk Hoy Endowed Professor of Education, is a co-author of “The Chicana/o/x dream: hope, resistance, and educational success” published by Harvard Education Press. The book was selected by Choice, a publishing unit of the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association, as one of its Editors' Picks for December 2021.

·      Erica Frankenberg, professor of education (educational leadership and demography), co-edited a book, "The Resegregation of Suburban Schools," that New York Times opinion writer Jay Caspian Kang listed as one of his sources of inspiration in 2021. In addition, Frankenberg is co-author of a new paper, Student Assignment Policies and Racial and Income Segregation of Schools, School Attendance Zones, and Neighborhoods” in Educational Administration Quarterly.

·      Maithreyi Gopalan, assistant professor of education (education and public policy), is lead author a new article, “College Students’ Sense of Belonging and Mental Health Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic” in Journal of Adolescent Health.

·      Ty Hollett, assistant professor of education (learning, design and technology), is the lead author on a new paper, “Learning with and beyond the body: The production of mobile architectures in a ballet variations class,” in Journal of the Learning Sciences. His co-authors are XinYung Peng, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Learning Performance Systems; and Susan Land, head of the Department of Learning and Performance Systems and professor of education (learning, design and technology).

·      Kevin Kinser, department head of EPS and professor and senior scientist of education (higher education), was quoted in an article, “High stakes’ and hurdles ahead for KAIST’s New York campus,” in Times Higher Education.

·      Paul Morgan, Harry & Marion Eberly Faculty Fellow and professor of education (educational theory and policy), was interviewed by Smart Talk, a radio program produced by WITF. The topic of the interview was “Is there a racial disparity between the children that are receiving special education services?”

·      Tiffany Nyachae, assistant professor of education (literacy education), has been accepted into the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS) Emerging Scholar Program for its inaugural year. As an ISLS Emerging Scholar, she will receive funding to support her research for one year, as well as mentorship and other support to help facilitate her work with the broader learning sciences community.

·      Esther Prins, professor of education (lifelong learning and adult education), is co-author of a new book, “Teaching and Learning about Family Literacy and Family Literacy Programs” that was published by Routledge.

·      Paul J. Riccomini, associate professor of education (special education), was named 2022 president for the Division for Learning Disabilities (DLD). DLD is one of 17 special interest groups of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, including both students with disabilities and the gifted. 

·      Gabriela Richard, assistant professor of education  (learning, design, and technology) was selected as one of the 11 finalists for the William T. Grant Scholars Program class of 2027. Applicants for the Scholars Program propose five-year research and mentoring plans designed to expand their skills and knowledge.

·      Kelly Rosinger, assistant professor of education (education and public policy) and research associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education, is co-author on a new InformEd States working paper, "The Landscape of State Funding Formulas for Public Colleges and Universities." Mitch Lingo, a postdoctoral fellow at Penn State, is the lead author.

·      Deborah Schussler, professor of education (educational leadership), is co-author on a new article, “Exploring Fidelity in School-Based Mindfulness Programs” in Global Advances in Health and Medicine.”
