Students, staff and faculty members from Penn State's College of Education share recent research and career achievements.
- Christy Beck, assistant teaching professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education (EPCSE) and Edwin L. Herr Clinic supervisor, provides tips on keeping a healthy frame of mind in the new year in a television spot for Fox8.
- Katerina Bodovski, associate professor of education (educational theory and policy) and Jiehui Zhao, a doctoral candidate in the College of Education at the University of Maryland and a former master’s student in Penn State’s College of Education, have an article, “The Effect of Family Background and Parental Expectations on Eighth Graders’ Academic Achievement in Rural and Urban China” in Frontiers of Education in China.
- Erica Frankenberg, professor of education (educational leadership) and director of the Center for Education and Civil Rights (CECR), and Katharine Dulaney, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Education Policy Studies (EPS), describe racial disparities between and within K-12 districts responding to the pandemic in a blog post, “Adding Nuance to School Reopening Plans during COVID-19” as part of the Insights from Expert Series by the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI). In addition, Frankenberg and Michelle Holme, associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Texas at Austin, discuss a study they co-authored, which found that students who reside in federally subsidized housing can face significantly higher levels of racial and economic isolation in school, in a podcast interview for Research Minutes.
- Susan Crandall Hart, a research project manager in the Department of EPCSE, is the lead author on a paper, “Nothing Lost, Something Gained? Impact of a Universal Social-Emotional Learning Program on Future State Test Performance” in Educational Researcher. The article was co-authored by EPCSE colleagues James DiPerna, professor of education (school psychology), Pui-Wa Lei, professor of education (educational psychology) and Weiyi Cheng, a research assistant in the department. The researchers’ study was also cited in an article, “Study: SEL program's impact on state test scores mixed” in K-12 Dive.
- Greg Kelly, senior associate dean for research and distinguished professor of science education, has been awarded the NARST 2021 Distinguished Contributions to Science Education through Research Award. This is the highest award that NARST bestows upon its members and is given only when a superior candidate is identified.
- A new study in Child Development led by Paul Morgan, professor of education in the Department of EPS, found that specific groups of kindergartners in the U.S. are more likely to be frequent technology users. The paper was co-authored by Yangyang Wang, a doctoral candidate in the Department of EPS, and Adrienne Woods, an EPS postdoctoral scholar. Morgan explained the research in this piece in The Conversation, and the study is also cited in an article in The Hechinger Report.
