— Naima Bhana, a doctoral candidate in the Special Education program, had her first article in Spanish, "¿Y cómo te fue hoy? La comunicación en niños/as con capacidad verbal limitada (And how did it go today? Communication in children with limited speech)," published in Aula De Innovacion Educativa, a practitioner journal for teachers and professionals in Spain and Latin America. The article was written and published in Spanish and translated into Catalan as well. Bhana’s co-author was Gabriela Rangel-Rodriguez, a doctoral candidate at the University of Barcelona.

— José Cossa, associate professor of education (lifelong learning and adult education and comparative and international education) and African Studies, has an article, "Cosmo-Ubuntu: Toward a New (Exterior to Modernity) Theorizing about the Human, the Cosmos, and Education," in Comparative Education Review.

— Royel Johnson, assistant professor of education (higher education) and research associate for the Center for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE), has joined The Review of Higher Education editorial team.

Kevin Kinser, professor of education (higher education) and head of the Department of Education Policy Studies; John Cheslock, associate professor of education (higher education) and senior research associate for CSHE; Eunjong Ra, deputy director at the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology in South Korea; and Sara Zipf, a doctoral candidate in higher education, have received grant funding from Arnold Ventures to study the phenomenon of online program managers (OPMs).

Gerald LeTendre, professor of education (education policy studies) and Peggy Schooling, professor of practice of education (educational leadership) and executive director of the Pennsylvania School Study Council, were recently awarded funding from the Center for Rural Pennsylvania to support their project, “Distance Learning and Online Coordination of Service in Pennsylvania’s Rural School Districts.”

— The research of Paul Morgan, professor of education in the Department of Education Policy Studies, and colleagues, is cited in the op-ed piece, “OPINION: Why school shutdowns are a disaster for science classes,” in The Hechinger Report. In addition, Morgan and Adrienne Woods, a postdoctoral scholar in the same department, discussed the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on special education service delivery with Carole Clancy, director of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, on Episode 7 of the Evidence-to-Impact Podcast.

Gabriela Richard, assistant professor of education in the Department of Learning and Performance Systems, has been named a finalist for the 2021 William T. Grant Scholars Program. Ten early-career researchers were selected from a pool of 44 applicants by the William T. Grant Foundation’s staff and Selection Committee. The 10 finalists will be interviewed in February 2021 and four to six Scholars will be announced in March. Selected Scholars will each receive $350,000 over five years and participate in annual meetings. Additionally, Richard, along with Tamara Clegg, assistant professor in the University of Maryland’s College of Education, and Brian Smith, professor in Drexel University’s School of Education, co-edited a special issue on culturally situated and social justice research and approaches in the learning and information sciences in Information and Learning Sciences.

Deborah Schussler, associate professor of education in the Department of Education Policy Studies, was appointed as associate editor of Mindfulness. The journal publishes peer-reviewed papers that examine the latest research findings and best practices in mindfulness.
