Students, staff and faculty members from Penn State's College of Education share recent research and career achievements.
- Uju Anya, assistant professor of education (second language education) was profiled on the Instagram page of Duolingo, an American language-learning website and mobile app as part of its Black History Month celebration with Anne Charity Hudley highlighting Black linguists from U.S. and across the diaspora. Anya is a Nigerian-Trinidadian-American scholar who specializes in sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and second language learning with a particular focus on race, gender, sexual and social class identities in the language classroom.
- Gwen Deger, a recent graduate of the Special Education doctoral program, defended her dissertation, “Identifying patterns in parental involvement: Examining the influences on children with high-incidence disabilities’ academic achievement and future educational aspirations.” Deger has been hired as assistant professor at Westminster College.
- Divya Deshpande, a recent graduate of the Special Education doctoral program, defended her dissertation: “Enhancing geometry problem solving for secondary students with disabilities: Investigating the virtual-representational-abstract instructional sequence and
metacognitive strategy instruction.”
- Karly Ford, assistant professor of education (higher education) in the Department of Education Policy Studies (EPS); Kelly Rosinger, assistant professor of education in EPS and research associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE); and Qiong Zhu, a postdoctoral research associate at Michigan State’s Education Policy Innovation Collaborative who recently received a doctorate in higher education from Penn State, have a new paper, “Consolidation of Class Advantages in the Wake of the Great Recession: University Enrollments, Educational Opportunity and Stratification” in Research in Higher Education.
- Paul Morgan, professor of education in the Department of EPS, has a new paper, “Unmeasured Confounding and Racial or Ethnic Disparities in Disability Identification,” in Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis.
- Carlomagno Panlilio, assistant professor of education in the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education (EPCSE), along with Christy Tirrell-Corbin, executive director of the Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention at the University of Maryland; and J. Bart Klika, chief research officer with Prevent Child Abuse America, wrote an op-ed, “The epidemic behind the mask: COVID-related education inequities” that was published by The Hill.
- David Passmore, distinguished professor of education, emeritus, gave a public lecture on “Artificial intelligence and the future of work” at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of Al Akhawayn University and sponsored by the Eurasia Foundation, in Ifrane, Morocco.
- Tracy Raulston, assistant professor of education in the Department of EPCSE, along with lead author Emily Laubscher, a researcher in Penn State’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Ciara Ousley, a doctoral candidate in EPCSE, have a new paper, “Supporting Peer Interactions in the Inclusive Preschool Classroom Using Visual Scene Displays” in Journal of Special Education Technology.
