Students, staff and faculty members from Penn State's College of Education share recent research and career achievements.

  • David Baker, professor of education (educational theory and policy, sociology, demography), was honored with the Penn State College of the Liberal Arts' Ray Lombra Award for Distinction in the Social Sciences at a ceremony on April 18 at The Penn Stater Hotel & Conference Center.
  • Mildred Boveda, associate professor of education (special education), is a co-author on a newly published article, “Hispanic-Serving Institutions as Racialized Organizations: Elevating Intersectional Consciousness to Reframe the ‘H’ in HSIs” in AERA Open.
  • A study by Erica Frankenberg, professor of education (educational leadership and demography), and Karen Babbs Hollett, a doctoral candidate in educational leadership, is the subject of a Chalkbeat Philadelphia article, “Black children hurt by structure of Pa. preschool programs, study says.” Additionally, Frankenberg was quoted in a another Chalkbeat Philadelphia story, “Philadelphia area schools among the most segregated in the country.”
  • David Passmore, distinguished professor emeritus of education, is quoted in an article, “For these young trainees, careers in solar look like Philly’s future” by WHYY, a PBS/NPR affiliate in Philadelphia.
  • John Randolph, a doctoral candidate in higher education, was recognized recently as a 2022 Veterans of Foreign Affairs/Student Veterans of America (SVA) Legislative Fellow. He is working on modernizing SVA’s work-study program to improve campus-belonging, financial support, and career opportunities for military-connected students.
  • Elizabeth Smolcic, teaching professor of education (second language education), co-authored a chapter in a book, “Language Teachers Studying Abroad: Identities, Emotions and Disruptions” published recently by Multilingual Matters. Other co-authors of the chapter include Magdalena Madany-Saa, a teaching assistant in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction; and the late Eleanor Sweeney, who was an adjunct instructor in the College of Education until she passed away in November 2021.
