Fulbright workshop set for April 26

Global Penn State will host a Fulbright workshop for faculty and staff at noon Thursday, April 26, in Foster Auditorium in Patnero Library. The workshop will include topics such as different Fulbright categories; preparing a project statement; application review process; program timeline; and recent changes to the program.

The workshop also will be accessible after the event via MediaSite.

Spring commencement scheduled for May 6

The baccalaureate spring commencement will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 6, in the Bryce Jordan Center. Provost Nicholas Jones will award degrees and Michelle Cooper, president of the Institute for Higher Education Policy, will deliver the commencement address. Reserved faculty seating arrangements can be confirmed in advance by emailing Christi McClellan at cym8@psu.edu no later than Friday, April 27.

Graduate degree commencement will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 6, in the Bryce Jordan Center. Faculty are invited to join in the graduate processional wearing academic regalia and should meet at the Bryce Jordan Center at 6 p.m.

The College of Education will hold a reception from 10 to 11:30 a.m. May 6 on the Chambers Building patio, weather permitting, for all students earning undergraduate or graduate degrees from the college.

SafeZone training offered to college community

A SafeZone 101 training will be provided by the LGBTQA Student Resource Center from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, April 30, in 106 Chambers Building. The training is for faculty, staff and graduate students and aims to help participants develop awareness of LGBTQ topics. It also is an opportunity to become more comfortable supporting LGBTQ students and to be able to help students find campus and local resources. Registration can be found at http://bit.ly/2pkagpt.

Annual staff retreat scheduled for May 18

The 2018 College of Education Annual Staff Retreat is scheduled for Friday, May 18. The retreat, hosted by the college's Diversity and Community Enhancement Committee, will be facilitated by the Shaver’s Creek Team Development Center and the focus will be a positive approach to team and community development and diversity education.

Dean David H. Monk has approved all staff attendance at the full-day retreat to count as a work day away from the office.

Volunteers needed for Trash to Treasure sale

The 17th annual Trash to Treasure sale is soliciting volunteers to assist with the set-up and sorting process, which will begin on May 5 and continue until June 2, the day of the sale. Individual or group volunteers are welcome to sign up. Volunteer hours are flexible and no previous experience is required.

Trash to Treasure is the largest recycling event in the area. Each year, more than 60 tons of donated goods from Penn State students moving out of residence halls is collected and sorted to be re-sold. All proceeds will benefit the 34 partner agencies of the Centre County United Way.

Faculty Activity Insight training to be offered this summer

The Faculty Activity Management Services Team, in partnership with members of the Activity Insight Oversight Committee, is hosting Activity Insight Training for faculty in May and August.

Activity Insight, an online software tool by Digital Measures, is designed to help faculty collect, organize and display data to assist in annual reviews and promotion and tenure opportunities. Its purpose is to provide an easier and more efficient way for colleges and campuses to manage large reporting processes.

The trainings will introduce faculty and staff to new features and provide expert tips. Participants can choose from six training dates:

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 14
  • 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16
  • 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, May 18
  • 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20
  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22
  • 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24.

Penn State to adopt tobacco-free policy across all campuses

Starting in fall 2018, Penn State will move to become a tobacco and smoke-free university. The change, which effects all campuses, prohibits the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco, all nicotine delivery devices and other tobacco products.
