Richard Kubina, professor of education (special education), is principal investigator of a one-year project entitled “Examining Available Technology for Video Modeling of Job Skills and Activities of Daily Life for People with Autism Spectrum Disorder” that has been awarded $79,245. Video modeling is an evidence-based instructional approach that helps students with autism spectrum disorder master new skills. The project will enhance video modeling by having students provide input on the behavioral sequences they will learn. Furthermore, the students will help create the videos for the selected vocation and personal care skills. The project will assess if the students learn more efficiently and experience greater satisfaction through video modeling than traditional instructional models.

Efraín Marimón, assistant teaching professor of education (curriculum and instruction), director of the Restorative Justice Initiative (RJI) and director of the Social Justice Fellowship, is principal investigator of a two-year project titled “Penn State, Ready for Pell Initiative” that has been awarded $120,000. This project will develop a collaboration with the Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) and Bloomsburg University to offer for-credit courses on existing sites in preparation for the restoration of Pell for prison education programs. Using this collaborative model, RJI will work to increase access and provide programmatic support to a Rehabilitative Justice certificate and develop a continuity model with CCP to provide for-credit, associate courses for facilities partnered with RJI. The project also will work with admissions and student aid offices to ensure recruitment of students completing their associate degree through RJI placements and other Second Chance Pell schools in Pennsylvania.
