  • Wenting “Ellen” Zou, assistant professor of education, is principal investigator (PI) of a four-year project, “Collaborative Research: HCC: Medium: Collaborative Upstanding: Leveraging Conversational AI to Cultivate Constructive Upstanders Among Teens” that has been awarded $832,449 from the National Science Foundation. This project employs artificial intelligence (AI) to empower adolescents in combating cyberbullying on social media safely. Addressing the alarming rates of cyberbullying among teens, it emphasizes the crucial role of bystanders in fostering prosocial behaviors, such as confronting bullies or supporting victims. Through advanced AI technologies like GPT-4 and AI chaining, the project facilitates collaborative upstanding, offering personalized guidance to teens. By encouraging empathetic responses, it aims to cultivate prosocial behaviors among teens, mitigating the negative impact of cyberbullying and promoting a safer online environment.
