- Christine Cunningham, professor of practice of education and engineering, is PI of a three-and-half-year project titled “Elevating Engineering with English Learners.” The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has awarded $2 million to WestEd and Penn State. This project develops, studies and refines a model of professional learning for teachers in grades 3–5 that benefits all students, while creating opportunities to learn engineering in ways that honor, privilege and center the experiences of emergent multilingual learners. The project will generate foundational understandings about the specific knowledge and attributes elementary teachers needs to provide inspiring, standards-aligned engineering education, as well as effective ways to prepare teachers in this area. The $241,827 Penn State subaward focuses on developing conceptual frameworks, designing professional learning experiences, and conducting research studies.
