  • Marisa DeCollibus, a fourth-year school psychology graduate student, and her mentor/adviser, Jennifer Frank, associate professor of education (special education and school psychology), are co-principal investigators (PIs) on a two-year project, “Cultivating Early Adults’ Flourishing with Mindfulness Training & Technology Assisted Skill Transfer: A Pilot Comparative Effectiveness Trial,” which has been awarded $14,670 by Mind and Life Institute. The study will use a comparative effectiveness trial to examine the efficacy of integrating a mindfulness-based training program into existing Penn State summer bridge program curricula and will evaluate the added benefits of using technology-assisted skill generalization strategies to help students apply their skills to everyday life. These findings will be used to inform summer bridge programming focused on student well-being and will provide a novel method for skill generalization using wearable technology.
  • Matthew Johnson, associate teaching professor of education (science education), and associate director at the Center for Science and the Schools (CSATS), is PI of a two-year project, “PA SMART: Network of Elementary Engineering Educators (NE3),” which has been awarded $497,250 from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. This project is a collaboration between CSATS and the Youth Engineering Solutions program. NE3 is designed to prepare 60 teacher educators from across the commonwealth to hold engineering workshops in their regions and provide them with curricular materials to create a lending library for teachers without access to curricular kits.
  • Kai Schafft, professor of education (educational leadership and rural sociology), is PI of a seven-month project, “Schools as Transformational Institutions to Create Thriving Communities in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Rural Settings,” which has been awarded $74,980 from the Spencer Foundation. The co-PIs are Maria Coady (North Carolina State University) and Jenny Seelig (NORC, University of Chicago). This effort assembles a team of researchers to develop a $3.5 million project focused on the structural conditions necessary for culturally and linguistically diverse rural communities to thrive.
