Priya Sharma, associate professor of education (learning, design, and technology), is principal investigator of a project, “Do we mean the same thing when we talk about financial inclusion and financial literacy? A comparative analysis of Fintech and rural community perspectives” that has been awarded $11,785 by Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria. The project explores ideas of financial literacy and inclusion from two different groups in Colombia — Fintech group leaders and rural community members. The researchers hope to identify gaps between theoretically and institutionally defined conceptions of financial literacy/inclusion and the everyday practical application of these ideas in rural contexts, which have seen dramatic increases in economic inequality in recent years. They also aim to understand the potentially disruptive role that technology, especially Fintech companies, can play in challenging current paradigms of financial literacy and inclusion.
