Sandberg works on a grant called the "Pennsylvania Expanded HIV Testing Initiative," which is managed by Liza Conyers, professor of education (rehabilitation and human services). He, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, works with clinics across the state to ensure that people who are at risk of becoming infected with HIV and/or hepatitis C are given information to help them avoid becoming infected. He also provides information on how those infected can avoid infecting others and helps in linkage to care. He works to ensure that everyone in the state who would like to be tested for HIV and hepatitis C are given the opportunity to receive a test to know their status. Sandberg's department provides trainings to clinics on HIV and hepatitis C, rapid testing, and Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), which is a daily medication that greatly reduces the risk of acquiring HIV for those at high-risk. He also helps to create and distribute brochures for clinics to help them share this message of public health. From January to June 2018, he and his team have helped more than 16,000 Pennsylvanians get tested for HIV and/or hepatitis C.
