Zbiek began her career as a mathematics and computer science teacher in Pennsylvania and was a faculty member in mathematics and mathematics education at the University of Iowa before coming to Penn State. Her earliest scholarly interests focused on teachers' and students' mathematical reasoning and representations in technology-intensive environments at the secondary and college levels, including the use of computer algebra systems and dynamic environments. Her research in this area is complemented by curriculum development projects that explored the feasibility of secondary school mathematics curricula that use technology to reconfigure curricular expectations. She chaired the international group for Computer Algebra in Mathematics Education.

A second strand of Zbiek’s work lies in teachers’ mathematical understandings as they support classroom practice and technology use. Related to this research interest, she served as series editor for the 16-book National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Essential Understanding project. The focus of her current scholarship is on mathematical modeling. One strand of her work investigates how teachers learn to do and teach mathematical modeling. A second strand involves the development of a specialized online environment to support student learning of mathematical modeling. She served on the authoring team of Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Mathematical Modeling. In addition to her work on funded projects, Zbiek served as an associate editor of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education and as a member of the NCTM Board of Directors.
